One of the classical methods of aerosol detection is the use of forward light scattering photometry. A light source is used to produce a cone of light with a dark center and a light sensitive element is placed in the dark area. Light scattering caused by the presence of aerosols increases the current in the light sensitive element proportional to the concentration of aerosols. Originally, photomultiplier tubes (PMT) were used as the light sensitive element. However, because of inherent drawbacks of the PMT, NUCON uses the more reliable photodiode.
The NUCON Model F aerosol detector designed specifically for field use is based on this classic forward light scattering principle, but uses modern matched components to assure reliable measurements at high sensitivity.
